First hummingbird siting in my yard this year. Or rather, first hummingbird hearing. I've had the feeder up for a month because Nancy, on the other side of the preserve, saw them in her yard a month ago. But this morning, the first one showed up in my yard. I was working just a few feet from the feeder. And as Mr. H swooped in, he was loud and startled me. I let out a little woop, and startled him right off. I hope he comes back and enjoys my pure cane sugar.
Yes they are sudden and the humming is loud. Startle loud! It's a good way to get our attention, announcing I'm here so no sudden moves, buddy. Also, I'm almost always tardy in putting out my feeder. One will suddenly fly up onto my deck and hover a few feet from my head, facing me, and give me the stare of guilt, then fly off and sometimes make one more humming staring appearance, before flying off again to give me time to do sweet penance for my sin of apathy.
